Lamp power supply problem is multifaceted, involving the quality of electronic components, circuit design, the performance of plastic irrigation, housing cooling capacity, waterproof design, but only one principal contradiction - heat.

1)  The LED wattage is of particular importance as many companies are using the 2W, 3W, 5W, 6W or even higher wattage LEDs and claiming that they are more powerful and thus creating a more productive flowering cycle.  The truth is that there is no more efficient LED than the High-Intensity 1W 10mm Diode.  The reason being is the input vs. output ratio drops off dramatically the higher wattage LED that is used, and the way you know this to be true is if you test your light with a voltage meter to see the actual power consumption of your light.  Our 90W UFO with all 1W Diodes draws between 80-85 watts depending on temperature, where a 90W UFO led lights comprised of all 3W Diodes will draw between 55-60 watts of consumption power.  The point is that it sounds good to hear a higher wattage LED being used, but the truth of the matter is that you are actually losing your overall power output by using these inefficient higher-wattage LEDs.

2)  The Brand name of the LEDs being used in lights is a popular marketing tool to advertise such brand names as Cree or Bridgelux.  The truth is that both Cree and Bridgelux both specialize in producing high Lumen LEDs that are used for commercial lighting like street lighting or commercial buildings.  Horticulture lighting is a specialty field and very few manufacturers in the world that produce LEDs lights that are appropriate for horticultural purposes.

3)  LED Lights that are significantly cheaper than other lights should raise a red flag right away.  The truth is that to use a precision LED that is an authentic 10mm (High-Intensity) 1W Diode is expensive, and to get around this cost issue, some companies use the 5mm diodes, which are significantly less powerful than the 10mm diodes, thus resulting in a poor performance.  There are a number of ways to skimp on the cost of manufacturing a quality LED Grow Light that produces results that are equivalent to HPS lighting, so beware of  low-priced LED Lights that sound too good to be true.

4)  The number of "Bands of Frequencies" used is of significant importance to photosynthetic activity.  There are 3 photosynthetic processes that occur; Chlorophyll A, Chlorophyll B & Carotenoids.  To address these processes you would need a minimum of 3 Bands, and to bring the full potential of your plants photosynthetic ability, you will need 2 of these Bands to be duplicated in more than on spectral output.   This is why we use 5 Bands in our lights, any more would be redundant and done so with an off-peak frequency.  Some companies advertise as much as 10 or 11 Bands, and although this sounds good in theory, in reality it is using the same principles that make an HPS light only capable of emitting 15% of absorbable light to your plants and this defeats the whole efficiency concept behind the use of LEDs.

5)  Lastly, the choice of which company to purchase your LED Grow Light is ultimately up to you and we try to provide you with as much detailed information as we can to help you make a more informed decision.  To better ensure you are getting what you pay for, make sure the company has been in business for several years and they offer a guarantee of performance and stand behind the product they are selling to the public.  The best way to really determine if you're buying a quality light is to talk to the company and ask questions.

When it comes to purchasing LED grow lights, we at ALL LED LLC know you have a plethora of choices available from many different sellers, all of whom claim that their products are the best available. While LED grow lights are definitely more power-efficient than the old generation of High-Pressure Sodium and Metal Halide bulbs, and will considerably lower your electricity bill, all LED grow lamps are not standardized and do not represent equal performance.  There are literally unlimited variables of wavelengths and ratios that can be employed into a light design, as well as the LEDs themselves and how they are powered.

Some manufacturers claim that their lamps are the brightest, and offer their specifications in lumens. A lumen, however, is a measure of light which is based upon human perception and not a true, accurate measure of the photosynthetic power of light at all. Indeed, while their light may appear to be bright to us, it might not be bright to plants at all; if the light does not consist of all the precision values (wavelengths) plants need to thrive. If a manufacturer advertises their light specifications in lumens, lux or candlepower, beware!

Plants also use many different bands of light for photosynthesis, and some bands of light which, while not photosynthetic to a plant, aid in healthy development, as well as flowering. Some of these photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic wavelengths are nearly outside the human range of perception, and do not seem as bright, even though they are nearly equal in power to the highly-visible bands. If these bands are neglected in favor of LEDs that appear bright to our eyes, plants will not develop correctly. This was a common complaint with early LED grow lamps that used only one or two different values of LEDs, but many manufacturers still design and produce lamps to these outdated specifications.

Oppositely, some manufacturers advertise a full-spectrum, and often include white, green, and yellow LEDs in their design. Many of these wavelengths, however, are inefficiently used by plants, if utilized at all. Plants have three main photosynthetic substances that react best at certain, precise wavelengths of light. When you look at plants in sunlight, most plants appear green, because the bluish-green through yellow-orange spectrum is the spectrum of light which most plants reflect. Reflected light is light which is not used by the plant! To address the use of white LEDs, almost all of them combine certain amounts of blue, red, and green light to produce what we see as white (visual purpose was the reason they were manufactured in the first place), but almost all of these white LEDs use wavelengths of these individual colors that are still nearly useless to plants.  Full spectrum advertisements SOUND good, but they are wasteful of the light you NEED and the electricity you pay for!

LED precision is of the UTMOST importance! If an LED output is even a fraction off of the plants necessary peak value, it can be extremely inefficient for photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic processes. Some manufacturers use less-expensive LEDs that seem close enough to the numerical peak, when, in fact, their chosen values may need up to 10 times (or more) as many LEDs to do what ONE LED of peak-value efficiency will do!  ALL LED LLC has scoured the globe to find the EXACT peak values that plants utilize. Only right on is close enough for us!  (And it should be for you as well!)

As you shop, you will also notice that some manufacturers advertise that they are using 5 and 10 watt LEDs in their products. While these LEDs are certainly showy and brighter than their 1 and 3 watt counterparts, they are also very power-inefficient. Higher-wattage LEDs create more heat, so much of the electricity they consume goes toward the manufacture of that heat, and the sad truth is that they do not put out nearly the proportion of light to the power consumed as the 1 and 3 watt LEDs. Depending on LED manufacturing differences, some 5W LEDs put out LESS light than the best 3W LEDs!  (Also, it should be noted that, for the wavelengths of light plants can best use, very few of these wavelengths are available in LEDs rated higher than 1 and 3 watts!)  Ironically, products that use higher-wattage LEDs to produce the same amount of light as 1W and 3W-based units are also much more costly to manufacture, and that cost gets passed down to you as the consumer many times over: once at the time of purchase, and again, every time you pay your electricity bill!

Lastly, many knockoff imitators manufacture lamps that may look like ours, or might actually differ in case color, shape, or style. These sellers claim to be just as good or better, but they rely on cheap gimmicks in order to try to stand out from the rest. (One maker even offers a black case, and black ABSORBS light!)  If you do your research, it will become very clear as to who is for real and those who are just reselling some cheap imported light to take advantage of a very promising industry.

Recently the San Diego Air and Space Museum picked MSi led lights as replacements for the hot and inefficient tungsten halogen Lighting that were being used in their exhibit spaces. LED lighting offers many advantages over tungsten halogen lighting traditionally found in museums - chief among them are cost savings in energy and maintenance. LED lights consume far less energy and produce almost no heat meaning reduced cost for both electricity and cooling. Museums will also realize savings in the costs of light replacement. A typical tungsten halogen light burning 12 hours a day will need replacement every four months. The equivalent LED light burning 12 hours a day can last up to 13 years.  Tough LED lighting can also withstand the constant repositioning that is required by museum’s changing exhibitions.

Further advantages of LED lighting include its ability to be dimmed without any shift in its color spectrum. This allows museums to increase or lower lighting for changing exhibitions without altering the color temperature of the light being produced. LED’s also provide a more focused light without any of the irregularities that occur when the tungsten halogen light passes through the lamp’s lens.

But perhaps the biggest advantage to using MSi LED lighting in museums is its contribution to the preservation of the objects that is housed there. lready used in taillights and turn signals, the LEDs’ steadily improving efficiency means this technology is moving up to the big job. They’ll be the standard-equipment headlights on the 2010 Audi R8 V-10 and optional on the V-8 R8. U.S. prices aren’t finalized, but ­Europeans will pay about $5000 for the set.

Why is Audi pursuing this technology? Simple: LEDs make more light than heat and take up less space. There is another benefit, too: LEDs can be arranged into whatever shapes designers and engineers demand—especially important to a style-leading brand such as Audi.

The common incandescent halogen bulb shines by electrifying and superheating a tungsten filament sealed in halogen gas. Less than five percent of the power consumed results in light, the rest is heat that is wasted. The ratio is somewhat better with high-intensity-discharge, or HID, headlights, where instead of passing over a solid filament, the current arcs between two filaments through a cloud of light-amplifying xenon gas.

Instead of incandescent, an LED is electroluminescent. Light is produced by electrifying a material, in this case a silicon chip, which is treated to be a diode, or a conductor through which electrons flow only one way. Varying the voltage to both sides of the diode excites the electrons, and their movement creates photons, or light.

Thanks to chip improvements, LED output is whiter and also brighter, from 15 lumens per watt in 2001, when Audi started its research, to 60 today, says Audi’s light engineering director, Stephan Berlitz. In the R8, the LEDs are clustered—14 for the low beam, eight for the high beam—and cooled by fans to keep internal temps below a diode-killing 300 degrees F. The fans also circulate warm air to defrost the lenses on cold mornings.

Berlitz says costs will remain high until more automakers adopt LED technology. Until then, LED hype will generate more heat than light.

New LED Lights Have a Bright Future for Communication

The University of California, Riverside will lead a multi-campus effort that could reshape the way we communicate and navigate in homes, offices, airports and yes – even the way billboards might contact us on city streets.

The Center for Ubiquitous Communication by Light (UC-Light) will be funded with $3.5 million from the Multicampus Research Program and Initiatives (MRPI) competition within the University of California system.

“PDAs, HDTV, information kiosks, computers and laptops all can be interconnected wirelessly through visible light,” said Zhengyuan Xu, a professor of electrical engineering at the Bourns College of Engineering, the principal investigator and director of the new research center.

He will work with researchers with expertise in communication, navigation, transportation, networking, and circuit integration from UC Riverside, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Merced and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to take advantage of the communication properties presented by led lights.

The project is anticipated to begin in January 2010 and run for five years.

Xu said the potential impacts of the research are huge. “With a proper data interface to a wired data network such as Ethernet, they make it possible to build very low-cost communication and navigation systems on existing Lighting infrastructure.”

The research results will likely have implications for current broadband wireless communication, HDTV signals, traffic navigation and directions, retrieving information via cell phones from electronic billboards, or allowing the refrigerator light to transmit information about what is needed on the next trip to the grocery store. Results will be especially important in areas where radio frequencies are limited, such as hospitals and airplanes.

“The visible light spectrum is several orders of magnitude larger than the crowded radiofrequency (RF) spectrum, and thus has huge potential for low cost and high data rate communication,” Xu said.

Discoveries will lead to an increase in related intellectual property, which would foster further technology transfer from the university to the commercial world, and could replace or supplement current wireless communication networks.

The Center will establish an advisory board consisting of invited experts and representatives from industry, government and academia. The researchers will consult advisory board members informally throughout the year, and the board will have a formal face-to-face meeting once per year.

Just like centralized heating systems contributed to the proliferations of rooms in a house, the advent of indoor plumbing contributed to the emergence of modern bathrooms and kitchens, and most dramatically the advent of the electric safety elevator allowed architects to design tall buildings; the advent of communication through common light sources could lead to a difference in the way houses and offices are designed.

Design a low-cost, high-performance LED driver

As Led production costs fall, they're being used more frequently in applications ranging from handheld devices, to automotive, to architectural Lighting. Their high reliability (operational lifetimes of greater than 50,000 hours), good efficiency (175 Lumens/W), and nearly instantaneous response make them a very attractive light source. However, driving LEDs is not without its challenges.

A controlled brightness requires driving the LED with a constant current, which must be maintained regardless of input voltage. Quite often, LEDs have a dimming requirement. For instance, it may be desirable to dim a display or architectural lights. There are two ways to accomplish this: either vary the LED current, or use pulse width modulation (PWM). The least effective way is varying the current because the light output isn't completely linear with current and the LED color spectrum tends to shift at currents below full rating.

It's important to remember that human perception of brightness is exponential, requiring a large percentage change in current for full dimming. This has a profound impact on the circuit design as a 3% regulation error at full current can become a 30% or more error at 10% load due to circuit tolerances. Dimming current waveform through PWM is more accurate, although the response speed becomes an issue. In lighting and displays, it's desirable to PWM above 100 Hz so the human eye doesn't perceive flicker.

As with any new project, there are some challenges associated with the placement of LED components in the SMT production environment. It is the goal of the EMS provider to overcome each of these obstacles to cut production costs and provide quality product to its customers and their end users. Some of the major challenges that EMS companies face when trying to place LED components in SMT production include:

1. Component handling in the feeder

During the picking process, LED components are withdrawn from the feeder by a vacuum nozzle. SMT technicians must ensure that the LED components are correctly positioned in the feeder pocket to guarantee that pick-up is achieved and that the LED is properly handled during the transport stages. “Slop in the pocket” may require nozzle centering during the picking process while excessively fast advancements of the feeder may skew the part in the pocket, preventing component pick-up.

2. Component handling on the nozzle and proper nozzle selection

Some LEDs, such as those from Cree, require special handling operations to prevent damage to the optical lens. They must avoid placing mechanical stress on the LED lens by not touching the optical surface during the component picking or placement processes. This eliminates the possibility of degraded performance from the LED after the circuit board is assembled. Proper nozzle selection also is important for the transport and placement processes. Not only does the SMT nozzle have to pick the component, it also must move it to the board and accurately place it. Most LED suppliers work directly with nozzle and tooling manufacturers, like Count On Tools, to develop nozzle designs that meet their individual process requirements.

3. LED sensitivity

The fragile optical surface is not the only issue with the use of LEDs in SMT production. Early LED designs were very temperature-sensitive, forcing assembly using unconventional methods, such as hand assembly. LEDs often were bonded to heat dissipative substrates using conductive epoxies or low-temperature solders. This required special assembly processes that lengthened the manufacturing process, increasing product build costs.

4. Scaling up to high-volume production

As LEDs become more robust, assembly via means of more conventional assembly processes such as automated SMT equipment allows EMS companies like Debron to focus on other challenges such as repeatable part picking and vision centering, as well as effectively increasing throughput and minimizing defects. Due to the partnership with Count On Tools, Inc., Debron was able to fine tune its automated assembly process and scale up to high-volume production of LEDs. Using the custom nozzle that it purchased from Count On Tools, Inc., Debron was able to reduce LED fallout to 2.3 percent. Defect rates dropped significantly and first pass yields increased steadily up to 99.4 percent.
